Savor Life’s Simple Pleasures.

I want to make an effort to slow down, reflect, and spend more time on the simple pursuits that brought me such joy as a kitten. Unspooling an entire roll of toilet paper. Playing with boxes. These are the delights of youth that I miss the most.

Where Small-Town Heart Meets Future-Forward Veterinary Innovation

By Lila James

Ever since Dr. Elizabeth Alexander was five years old, she knew exactly what she wanted to be when she grew up. When her older brother toyed with the idea of being a veterinarian, Dr. Alexander wanted to be just like him. He moved onto other passions, but Dr. Alexander’s heart was set on being a veterinarian. After earning her veterinary degree at LSU and practicing in Florida, she began searching for a small animal practice of her own; a place where she could set high standards of medicine while staying close to family in the Upstate.

When Ambassador Animal Hospital came up for sale in Greenville, everything fell into place. Founded in 1965, the practice had been serving local families for nearly half a century. Taking ownership in 2013 wasn’t just a career milestone for Dr. Alexander; it was an opportunity to honor a rich community legacy while building a state-of-the-art future for pet healthcare.

“We have clients who tell me they came here with their grandparents when they were children in the 70’s. Honoring those generations of relationships is so important to me. It was a small-town family practice then, and we want to be that same warm, welcoming family practice today.”

A Modern Facility Designed for Comfort and Precision

Under Dr. Alexander’s leadership, Ambassador Animal Hospital has undergone a remarkable transformation. The practice has evolved from its original 1965 cinder-block building on Wade Hampton into a spacious, light-filled facility across the street, equipped with 9 exam rooms, and advanced medical technology.

Behind every patient’s care is a cohesive, highly skilled team of 20 professionals, including four dedicated veterinarians who work in constant collaboration. Long-time team member Kayla Swanger (who has been with Dr. Alexander for 13 years and counting) works alongside experienced technicians, assistants, and client care staff to create a supportive, family-like culture. Whether it's a team member who excels in surgery or an assistant with a special touch for nervous pets, the team plays to individual strengths while maintaining deep ethical standards and genuine teamwork.

The centerpiece of the modern facility is its expansive treatment suite, featuring dedicated rooms for specialized care:

  • Advanced Diagnostics: Equipped with digital X-rays and high-resolution ultrasound technology for non-invasive internal evaluations.
  • Dental Care: On-site digital dental X-rays allow doctors to identify hidden disease and issues under the gumline.
  • Visiting Specialists: By bringing board-certified orthopedic surgeons, cardiologists, and internal medicine specialists directly into Ambassador, pets receive high-level specialty care in a familiar environment alongside the team they already know and trust.

Freedom, Compassion, and Family-Friendly Care

As an independently owned practice, Ambassador Animal Hospital operates with a level of freedom that corporate-owned clinics simply cannot match. Dr. Alexander and her veterinary team make medical decisions based solely on what is best for the patient, without corporate protocols, shareholders, or rigid mandates.

“Because we don’t have shareholders or corporate executives to answer to, we can offer family-friendly pricing that keeps top-notch care accessible. Our patients get exceptional, personalized medicine from a team that knows their name and story.”

To make preventative medicine even more seamless for busy families, Ambassador offers tailored Wellness Care Plans. Designed as a predictable monthly subscription fee, these plans bundle routine checkups, annual vaccinations, diagnostic bloodwork, and tech visits into budget-friendly payments—ensuring pets get consistent care year-round without unexpected financial stress.

                      WHAT MAKES AMBASSADOR SPECIAL?

• Independent Ownership: Patient-first medical freedom without corporate rules

• Comprehensive Services: Preventive care, surgery, dental X-rays & ultrasound

• Dedicated Comfort Suite: A quiet, private room with its own separate exit

Advocating for Those Who Cannot Speak

Dr. Alexander lives right in the North Main area with her husband, their four children (ages 5-17) and seven pets: three cats and four dogs (including Bolt, the official office dog). It is a lively household to say the least! Living in the neighborhood right by her practice, she understands firsthand how deeply pets enrich family and community life. That personal perspective shapes every interaction at Ambassador.

“Our motto, ‘We Speak Dog and Cat,’ means being a voice for animals who can’t tell us where it hurts. Owners often assume a pet is just slowing down due to age, but thorough physical exams and modern diagnostics frequently reveal hidden pain. Our obligation is to advocate for their quality of life, diagnose what they can’t express, and ensure they live their happiest, healthiest years alongside the families who love them.”

— Dr. Elizabeth Alexander

Above all, Dr. Alexander wants every client and pet who enters the building to feel genuinely welcomed, comfortable, seen, and wanted. Whether welcoming a new puppy or kitten for its first visit, serving multi-generational families who have trusted the hospital for decades, or offering gentle end-of-life-care, Dr. Elizabeth Alexander and the team at Ambassador Animal Hospital are proud to be an integral part of Greenville’s extended family, continuing a 60-year tradition of caring for local pets like their very own.
